REHABILITATION FOR TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY PATIENTS
Visual
Rehabilitation for Special Populations

We examine patients
with closed head injuries, post-traumatic vision syndrome,
traumatic brain injuries (TBI), & stroke.
We can examine patients who are physically and mentally
challenged (even those who cannot communicate).
Dr.
Carl Garbus and the staff at Family
Vision Care Optometry have worked extensively in the treatment
of post-traumatic vision syndrome. Patients with closed
head trauma (traumatic brain injuries or TBI) often develop
visual problems, which include loss of convergence and near point
focusing skills along with ocular motor, and tracking problems.
The patient group, which we successfully treat, is differentiated
from patients with closed head injuries who actually have
cranial nerve defects, which create a paralytic condition
of the extraocular muscles.
The
general medically accepted approach to all closed head injury
patients who have double vision is to either attempt strabismus
surgery to change the angle of deviation of the eyes or to simply
tell a patient to patch an eye to eliminate the double vision.
In many cases, a patient may come into the office reporting
double vision. They had been told that nothing could be done
other than patching one of the eyes. After an extensive evaluation,
the doctors at Family Vision Care Optometry may either prescribe
special lenses with prisms or vision therapy. Many of these
patients can resolve their double vision at all distance beyond
eight inches.
